Take a Break from Winter and See the Cherry Blossom’s Bloom Early in Okinawa!

Spring is Japan's most stunning season, when thousands of Sakura (cherry blossom trees) explode with marvelous wonder during what is undoubtedly the highest travel season. From late March to mid-April, or even early May, the country's iconic Sakura capture the attention of visitors and locals as their beautiful flowers blanket the country in soft pink splendor.

Cherry blossom season starts in southwestern Japan in March, and daily news reports follow the blooming of the cherry blossoms as they make their way northward. There are countless locations for cherry blossom viewing throughout Japan, but did you know that cherry blossoms in the southernmost prefecture of Okinawa are the first to bloom in Japan? Its warm climate allows the cherry blossom flowers to begin blooming as early as mid-January.

The most common Cherry trees throughout Japan are called “Somei-Yoshino”. In contrast, Cherry trees in Okinawa are called Kanhizakura. Somei-Yoshi feature abundant pale pink blossoms while the cherry blossom flowers of Kanhizakura trees are adorned with deeper shades of pink and bloom in more of a downward angle.

Here are some recommended places to visit where you can enjoy the cherry blossoms in Okinawa.

Nakijin Castle Ruins is one of the best places for cherry blossom viewing. Built in the 13th century, Nakijin castle was the second largest castle in Okinawa, and is an important example of Okinawa’s Ryukyu heritage. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cherry blossom viewing during the day is magnificent, but you can also enjoy a magical experience in experiencing the illumination of the cherry blossoms at night.

Another recommended viewing site is Motobu Yaedake. Showcasing more than 7,000 cherry trees, visitors can hike, bike or drive up along a winding road to the 1486 feet summit of Mt. Yaedake under a canopy of beautiful cherry blossoms. About halfway up towards the summit, visitors can stop at Yaedake Sakuranomori Park. Featuring a playground perfect for young children, and areas for families to picnic, the park is a perfect place to bring your own picnic lunch and enjoy the magnificent view of Mr. Yaedake.
